NBA Begins Protest Over Judiciary Autonomy

Members of the Nigerian Bar Association in Ondo state has marched to the governor’s office in solidarity with judiciary workers who are asking for financial autonomy.

The protest followed a directive by the NBA National President, Olumide Akpata to all state branches to stage a protest today.

The lawyers and some JUSUN workers converged on the gate of the Ondo state high court in Akure chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards.

From there, the lawyers marched to the governor’s office to submit their protest letter and stressed the need for full independence of the judiciary.

Chairman, Akure branch of the NBA, Rotimi Olorunfemi, his counterpart from Okitipupa branch, James Orimisan said financial autonomy for the judiciary is a constitutional matter and non negotiable.

Ondo state deputy governor, Lucky Ayedatiwa told the protesters that the state is not oppose to financial autonomy for the judiciary.

Ayedatiwa promised to deliver the protest letter to governor Rotimi Akeredolu when he resumes next week.
