India: BJP makes election vow to remove Kashmir’s special rights

India’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) say it would remove decades-long special rights for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Kashmir’s special constitutional status prevents outsiders from buying property in the state, with argument that such laws have hindered its integration with the rest of the country.

Political leaders in Mushin-majority Kashmir have warned that repealing the law would lead to widespread unrest.

Prime minister Narendra Modi and his party, BJP at the release of their election manifesto made the promise.

Reports say voting in the general election begins on Thursday, polls will be held around the country over coming weeks and will be counted on May 23.
